Inauguration of the extension building

June 09, 2017

The tape-cutting ceremony for the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology’s new building at Advokatenweg 36 will take place on Thursday, 15 June 2017. The ceremony will begin at 4:30 p.m. and will conclude with an inauguration party starting at 6:45 p.m., to which the institute’s neighbours were also invited.

Ready for use after two years of construction

The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology’s new building houses the department “Law & Anthropology”. Construction started in May 2015, and the department’s director, Prof. Dr Marie-Claire Foblets, and her colleagues were able to move into the building in December 2016. The landscaping around the building will be finished in June 2017. Designed by the architects Kister, Scheithauer and Gross, who also planned the institute’s first extension building in 2001, the three-storey building has a total floor area of 650 square meters and provides 20 new offices, 40 workplaces and a large seminar room. The building costs totalled approximately 4 million euros.

“We are very happy that we can now enlarge our team”, Marie-Claire Foblets says. “This building will provide an appropriate setting for the development of the department “Law & Anthropology”, making the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology even more attractive to scholars from all over the world.”

Speakers at the inauguration will include Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Angela D. Friederici, vice-president of the Max Planck Society, and Prof. Dr Dr Gunnar Berg, vice president of the Leopoldina, the German National Academy of Sciences.
