Roundtable discussion – Everyday boundaries: migrants in Halle

February 19, 2018

Current scholarly and political debates about migration to Germany and to Europe more generally have focused on how migrants and asylum-seekers can successfully be integrated in the new society. The research initiative ‘Challenges of Migration, Integration and Exclusion’ (WiMi) financed by the Max Planck Society turns its gaze instead to the patterns and mechanisms that produce exclusion. On 27 February 2018 the initiative will hold a roundtable discussion on the specific context of Halle, offering a variety of perspectives on ways that migrants are marginalized and excluded in everyday life.

During the discussion, which will be moderated by Prof. Dr. Günther Schlee, Director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, panellists will explore questions such as: How does one find a flat and a job? Will one’s children be able to attend the school that is right for them and receive good medical care? How does one cope with everyday racism and social and cultural differences? Experts from migrant advocacy organizations will recount their experiences with these everyday realities. The panel aims to provide a nuanced, multi-faceted picture of the situation in Halle and leave the audience with much food for thought.
