Mathijs Pelkmans was born in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He obtained his MA in cultural anthropology at Nijmegen University in October 1996 and recently finished his PhD dissertation at the Amsterdam School for Social science Research, University of Amsterdam. He joined the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in February 2003.
