Arjun Appadurai is a widely acknowledged expert on globalization, cities, xenophobia and financial markets. His current work is on the long-term resilience of the caste system in India, a country which has been a focus of his research for almost a half century, and has addressed such topics as religion, food, religion, agriculture and cinema. In addition to his position at the Max-Planck Institute for Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Gottingen, he is Goddard Professor (Emeritus) of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University.
