Khundetgekh Yos: Forms of respect and disregard in Mongolian culture 13th – 21st century

My dissertation project focuses on the “custom of respect” as it is called in Mongolian. A major issue regarding relations of respect during my first time of research were the changes in the value system which have been perceived to take place after socialism by people who live in Ulaanbaatar having partially come from different aimags of Mongolia. Specifically, I aim at studying how forms of respect and disregard have changed over time. I will look at their roles and the meanings they take on for Mongolians in what they designate as social, political and cultural contexts, additionally considering particular Mongolian history and wider transformations in Eurasia which may have had an influence on the development of the value of respect.
