April 08, 2013

The International Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment received a grant of nearly € 1.5 million from the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science.

In March 2013, the International Max Planck Research School on Retaliation, Mediation and Punishment (IMPRS REMEP) secured a second funding period from January 2014 to December 2019. The research school will receive a total of € 1.470.000 from the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science, i.e., the maximum available grant of € 245.000 p.a.

In 2012, the IMPRS REMEP was positively evaluated by a group of eminent international experts who concluded in their report that the research school was a “unique cross-institutional and interdisciplinary venture that offers students an unrivalled opportunity and funding to undertake doctoral research on important topics in a highly collaborative and genuinely innovative intellectual environment. The reviewers view the IMPRS REMEP as a great success in both science and education.” The Max Planck Society followed the recommendation of the experts to continue funding of the research school and approved the grant application.

The IMPRS REMEP is a structured and interdisciplinary research and teaching network for doctoral studies. It focuses on the role of retaliation, mediation and punishment for social order, peace and human security in society, which constitutes a fundamental question common to the fields of sociology, social anthropology, history, jurisprudence and political science. The Research School was founded in January 2008. Up until now, 37 highly qualified doctoral students from Germany and abroad have been admitted to the Research School. The end of the first funding period will be 31 December 2013.

The IMPRS REMEP is one of currently more than sixty International Max Planck Research Schools under the umbrella of, and funded by, the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science and numerous German universities. The IMPRS REMEP is unique in its set-up, as it builds on the capacities of four Max Planck Institutes and two universities creating synergies necessary to conduct first class interdisciplinary research in the multi-faceted and cross-cultural area of study on retaliation, mediation and punishment. The participating institutions are the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law (Heidelberg), the Max Planck Institute for European Legal History (Frankfurt), the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law (Freiburg) and the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology (Halle) as well as the University of Freiburg and the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. The current spokesperson is Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Hans-Jörg Albrecht, director at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg. From 2014 onwards Prof. Dr. Günther Schlee, director at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, will act as spokesperson of the research school.
