Rubie Watson opens international workshop on ‘Chinese Patriarchy’

On June 26th (18:00–19:00), Rubie Watson (Harvard University) will deliver a keynote lecture to launch an international workshop on ‘Chinese Patriarchy’ organized by Stevan Harrell (University of Washington) and Gonçalo Santos (Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology).

The keynote, entitled “Chinese Patriarchy: Past, Present, Future”, will revisit the ways in which the concept of ‘patriarchy’ has been employed among Chinese reformers and social scientists of China for generations. This discussion will be followed by an analysis of current social trends in China and by a series of reflections on whether the concept of patriarchy has outlived its usefulness. This event is an initiative of the research group: ‘Kinship and Social Support in China and Vietnam’.
