The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology is saddened to hear of the passing, on 16th July in Cambridge, shortly before his 96th birthday, of Sir Jack Goody.
One of the outstanding social anthropologists of recent generations, Goody gradually expanded his interests from West African ethnography to embrace Eurasian and world history since the Bronze Age. He played a significant role in the deliberations which led to the foundation of Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in 1999 and has been a source of inspiration to many researchers at the institute.
