Interview with Biao Xiang in the Frankfurter Rundschau
In an interview with the Frankfurter Rundschau, Biao Xiang talks about current events and the insights his research offers into global developments and conflicts. The worldwide spread of platform corporations, for example, can be seen as a new form of feudalism. Crises do not necessarily lead to fundamental change, he points out, as the financial crisis of 2008 demonstrated. Current global conflicts such as those in Ukraine and Taiwan are part of larger processes. Xiang notes that in the United States “the problems of racism, economic inequality, ideological polarization, and the systemic crisis of democracy seem virtually impossible to solve. In response, powerful elites attempt to exert their influence globally to compensate for their dwindling legitimacy in their own country. For the US elites, the war between Russia and Ukraine was practically a godsend. The military-industrial complex has rapidly expanded into a global conglomeration of the military, industry, financial sector, and media. In order to maintain this, the confrontation with China became a strategic necessity.”
