MPI Director Ursula Rao Appointed to German Science and Humanities Council

January 30, 2023

Ursula Rao, Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, has been appointed as a member of the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR). This body advises the federal and state governments on policy matters concerning science, research, and higher education. Rao will begin her term of office on 1 February 2023.

The Science and Humanities Council is composed of representatives from academia, the public sphere, and politics who work together to prepare recommendations and position statements for the federal and state governments on central questions involving the German research and higher education system. The Scientific Commission within the council consists of 24 scholars and 8 members from other sectors (e.g., the private sector, non-profits, media). They are chosen by the Federal President of Germany.

“For many years, the Science and Humanities Council has played an important role in shaping the long-term development of research and higher education. It has helped to ensure that German science has continued to be internationally recognized and competitive,” says Rao. “It is a great honour to have been appointed by the Federal President as a member of this council.”
