Profile
Sofia Pinedo-Padoch is an anthropologist of the United States and Ukraine with a specialty in the anthropology of law, bureaucracy, death, and property. Her current research focuses on reconstruction and property restitution in Ukraine.
She received her PhD in anthropology from Princeton University in 2023 under the supervision of Carol Greenhouse and Joao Biehl. Her dissertation, “Life After Death in New York City: An Ethnography of Public Administration,” examines the work of a small city agency that administers the estates of New Yorkers who die intestate and without close family. Before beginning her postdoctoral fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, she was a faculty member of the Bard Prison Initiative and the Language and Thinking Program at Bard College.
