History and Culture of Southern Tajikistan since the Late Nineteenth Century

Wolfgang Holzwarth, a senior scholar in Social Anthropology and Iranian Studies, is based at the Oriental Institute of the University of Halle and associated with the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology. In his current project, he is tracing long-term developments in multiethnic milieus of southern Tajikistan from the days of the Bukharan Emirate through the Soviet period to independent Tajikistan in order to understand the impact of changing political and economic arrangements on local society and culture.
