Profile
John Eidson was born in Kittery, Maine, U.S.A., and received his B.A. in Anthropology from Duke University (1976) and his Ph.D in Social Anthropology from Cornell University (1983). He has taught in the Anthropology Department of the University of Maryland in College Park (1983-1991) and in the Institut für Kulturwissenschaften at the University of Leipzig (1991-2000). He joined the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in April 2000. Eidson's first research project, beginning in 1979, was set in a small town in the Middle Rhine Valley and focused on local politics, civic organizations, local festivals, and local forms of historical memory. Since 1994, he has been conducting research on social, political, and economic life in the Southern Region of Leipzig.
