Profile
Lale Yalçın-Heckmann was born in Istanbul, educated in Ankara and Istanbul (BA in sociology, Boğaziçi University, 1978), and studied social anthropology at the London School of Economics (PhD, 1986). Her first research was on tribal structures and local politics among Kurds in south-eastern Turkey. After moving to Germany in 1988 she continued publishing on Kurds, as well as carrying out new research on Turkish and Kurdish migrants and Islam in Germany and France. She was a senior researcher of the Institute from June 2000 to September 2009 with projects on rural property in Azerbaijan (Habilitation 2009) and on ‚Caucasian Boundaries and Citizenship from Below‘ where she led a research group investigating various aspects of citizenship in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. Since 2010 she is a Docent at the University of Pardubice, Czech Republic, teaching social anthropology. Between 2010 and 2014 she also has taken up Vertretungsprofessur altogether for two years at Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. She is a faculty member of the International Max Planck Research School ANARCHIE and of the Research Cluster ‚Society and Culture in Motion‘ of the University in Halle. In the ERC Project REALEURASIA she will be primarily coordinating the scientific and research activities, as well as engaging with supervision and some research in Turkey.
