Burkhard Schnepel was appointed Max Planck Fellow for five years by the Max Planck Society

Burkhard Schnepel, Professor for Social Anthropology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, was appointed Max Planck Fellow by the Max Planck Society and will be leading a Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology for at least the next five years. He will receive research funds of half a million Euros for his programme „Connectivity in Motion: Port Cities of the Indian Ocean“, which will commence this October.

The research programme focuses on globalisation in its historical depth and aims to make an important contribution to the current debate on globalisation. The programme consists of several projects and will be concerned with the Indian Ocean macro region. Special focus is on motions of people, animals, plants, goods, diseases, ideas, languages, religions and political ideals across the Indian Ocean and on the modifications in meaning and function that they undergo in the process. The starting points and the endpoints of these motions will be investigated particularly with regard to the port cities of the Indian Ocean.
