Franz von Benda-Beckmann, 1941 to 2013

January 09, 2013

Professor Emeritus Franz von Benda-Beckmann has passed away. The members of the MPI for Social Anthropology express their profound sorrow at the death of an accomplished scholar and revered colleague.

At the age of 71, Franz von Benda-Beckmann died unexpectedly in Amsterdam on 7 January 2013. One of the most influential German scholars in the field of legal anthropology, he was widely recognized internationally. Up to the end of his life, this outstanding colleague and teacher was also active in research. As leader of the Project Group “Legal Pluralism,” he contributed decisively to anchoring research on legal anthropology at our MPI, not only through his scholarship but also through his winning personality and collegiality. We are moved deeply by the loss of this committed scholar.

In the name of all colleagues at our institute,

Günther Schlee, Chris Hann and Marie-Claire Foblets

Halle, 9 January 2013
