Profile
Christian Straube was a Ph.D candidate at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale, Germany. His academic background lies in Chinese Studies. During his fieldwork from July 2015 to October 2016, Christian studied the social infrastructure in one of Luanshya’s mine townships. In his thesis, he deals with the absence of the current Chinese mine operator CNMC in the township, the privatisation of formerly corporate spaces, the conquest of the urban by rural practices and the very personal struggle of the residents to keep buildings with communal functions alive.
