Abstract
This special issue of the Journal of Legal Pluralism and Unofficial Law (vol 47:3) is dedicated to the legacy of Franz von Benda-Beckmann. As the title Legal Pluralism in Past and Future suggests, it contains a reflection on the importance of Franz von Benda-Beckmann’s body of work for the study of legal pluralism.

The special issue is a joint venture of the Department “Law & Anthropology” at the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle, represented by Bertram Turner, and the Executive Board of the Commission on Legal Pluralism, represented by Maarten Bavinck and Marc Simon Thomas. Franz von Benda-Beckman was intimately linked to both of these institutions. He was a co-founder of the Commission and of the Department “Law and Anthropology’s” precursor at the MPI, the Project Group 'Legal Pluralism', which Franz, together with Keebet von Benda-Beckmann, directed from 2000 to 2012.
