Is banning travel a good idea?

The World Health Organization's International Health Regulations (2005) required countries to seek approval from WHO before halting international flights, otherwise deeming such activity a violation of international law. However, this rule is very likely to be changed at the 74th World Health Assembly (24 May-1 June 2021), despite support from previous research. What kinds of travel restrictions were imposed in different parts of the world during the pandemic—and how and what were the consequences? To answer that, Biao Xiang joins Jelena Dzankic, Timothy Jacob-Owens and Lorenzo Piccoli of the European University Institute (EUI) to discuss their project Citizenship, Migration and Mobility in a Pandemic, which is jointly funded by Globalcit and nccr - on the move.
